Resumo: A choir's sight singing, intonation, sense of ensemble, and ability to respond to conducting gestures can be ameliorated by consistently rehearsing without piano accompaniment. In order to help students achieve musical independence from the piano, a sight-reading system that gives singers a tool with which to approach the music needs to be selected. Although a range of systems is available, the movable do system has a number of advantages, is the choice of many teachers, and can be part of a multistep process to weaning choirs away from the piano. Students involved in this process should begin to read choral music as soon as possible. As advanced choirs become proficient at sight reading, the piano can be removed from the rehearsal altogether and a pitch pipe can be used for starting notes.
