Resumo: A study investigated the conductor rehearsal behaviors that contribute to successful choral rehearsal experiences. Data were obtained from 500 singers in ten established adult community choirs in the New York metropolitan area. Results identified five specific conductor behaviors as being most important in implementing a successful rehearsal. Conductors should give clear and easy-to-understand instructions, show enthusiasm during rehearsal, hear “problem areas” and correct the errors, select music that matches the ability level of the group, and instill confidence in the singers. Practice strategies for incorporating each behavior into the conducting class are provided, along with critical-thinking questions for the preservice teacher to consider.
